Electric Water Heater installation

  Pre-Install Checklist link

Basic Overall Project Walk Through

Turn off power to Water Heater.

If you must turn off breakers in the main panel, inform client before turning off breaker. Breakers are often mislabeled and you may turn off a computer or something else that may cause a problem for the client. Just let them know this could happen if a breaker is mislabeled. Let them give you the okay before turning off the breaker

KEYS TO SUCCESS:

  • Hook up the hose to the drain valve and allow very good water flow out of the hose before you shut off the water supply, this will help clear debris from the bottom of the tank that can make it difficult to drain the water heater.

  • Be sure that you “cut” the existing pipes as long as possible so that you have plenty to work with when hooking up the new water heater.

  • Open a nearby faucet (hot) to allow air to enter into the lines while draining.

  • Never turn on the power until the water heater is full of water

Remove old unit following standard industry guidelines. Use caution when carrying old or new equipment through home. Keep trash picked up while working and never leave trash, screws, or left over parts in home, attic, or yard. Place trash in bags before carrying through home.

Make note of ALL connections to facilitate installation of replacement unit, take pictures NOW use these for before and after in the dispatching software.

ALWAYS USE CARE AND CAUTION CARRYING UNITS UP & DOWN LADDERS AND PULL DOWN STAIRS, CALL FOR HELP IF NEEDED

Read manufacturer’s installation instructions completely before beginning

Install Unit level. Make sure proper clearances will be maintained as per manufacturer’s instructions and local code, do not obstruct clear access to unit shut/disconnect. Install vibration isolators if required or ordered.

Water heater must be installed in such a way the nothing else must be removed if the water heater has to be replaced again.

Have fire extinguisher ready prior to beginning “hot work”. Make sure to move any trash or debris from around unit or work area to prevent any fire hazards.

Use proper protection such as but not limited to gloves and safety glasses. Never use anything other than a striker to light torch.

Ensure you have stable footing at work area

Be sure to keep flame and heat away from unit cabinet and any materials that may get damaged by an open flame, INCLUDING YOURSELF

Make piping connections using proper Soldering/Brazing Techniques. Minimize heat as much as possible. Always make every attempt to slide pipe insulation over tubing without cutting insulation. This is best achieved by leaving the last solder joint closest to unit and slide insulation over pipe and “hold back” with tubing cutter while completing final solder joint.

If insulation must be cut to be installed PLEASE be very neat and turn cut side down as to not be seen and take care putting tape or “zip ties” to hold insulation. This is part of the job the customer can see the easiest and should look the best.

Controls & Wiring

Following manufacturer’s instructions make all line voltage connections. Wiring should be properly secured as needed and routed to avoid any interference with other components or servicing of equipment. Never use any tool other than wire strippers to remove insulation from wire.! When connecting one wire to another, a suitable size wire nut or crimp connector must be used. Crimp connections are to be made using only a wire crimping tool made for that expressed purpose. Never route wire directly through component cabinet or sheet metal, always use some type of grommet, connector, or other approved device. Properly route and secure all wires through cabinet.

Water Line Connections

Never use “composite/plastic/pex/CPVC” type materials connected directly to water heater, use appropriate flexible connector or rigid (copper, steel, etc) for at least 6” from the water line connections at the water heater.

Inspection

⬜ The final inspection is perhaps the most important step. It is the company’s intention to provide our client with the best overall experience possible. The client really has no way of knowing how well we performed, they only know what they see. Make sure all our debris and trash has been removed. Make sure drain lines are properly sloped and supported.

⬜ Record model and serial numbers on invoice and on customer’s copy of manuals. Leave manuals and all pertinent data with client or ask permission to leave inside unit.

⬜ Place new equipment sticker on unit and anywhere else that may be appropriate.

⬜ Complete invoicing and ALL paperwork as required and collect for work performed.
